RWANDA - LAND OF A THOUSAND HILLS
Rwanda is a landlocked country in east-central Africa bordered by Uganda, Tanzania, Burundi, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). It is often described as ‘Le Pays des Mille Collines’ or ‘The Land of a Thousand Hills’ and refers to itself even more often as the self-styled Switzerland of Africa. Rwanda’s mostly highland topography creates a pleasant tropical climate, featuring magical views of Lake Kivu and the partially active Virunga Volcanoes dominating the country’s higher elevations. Whose peaks are shrouded in perpetual mist, and the tropical forests of the lower elevations resound with the calls of exotic birds and the excited chatter of Golden Monkeys, is home also to the rare and endangered Mountain Gorillas.
As it is one of the smallest countries in East Africa, Rwanda features only four national parks, and of those, the Volcanoes National Park is the most important as it is not just home to the endangered highland Mountain Gorillas but features five of the eight volcanoes of the Virunga Mountain Range (Bisoke, Karisimbi, Muhabura, Gahinga, and Sabyinyo).
It is in the saddle area between Mount Visoke and Mount Karisimbi, where world-renowned American zoologist Dian Fossey previously operated a mountain gorilla research facility between 1966 and 1985. The ‘Dian Foessey’ trekking adventure of Mount Visoke is still one of the more popular hiking trails today, even though all that remains there is a graveyard, with several of Dian Fossey’s favorite gorillas buried next to her own grave.
Of the other three national parks within Rwanda, the Nyungwe Forest Reserve also qualifies as an essential sanctuary for tropical birds. 270 species are recorded in this park alone, and more than 700 are found in the larger lowland savannah of the Akagera National Park on the border with the Kagera River.
