Trek mountain gorillas in Bwindi, give back on the Ssese Islands, and close out in Kampala. Available as a full 14-day programme or a standalone 7-day Week 1 — built by a Ugandan family-owned DMC, not a tour broker.
The Rift Valley Explorer is a Ugandan family-owned company, and our family's roots are on the Ssese Islands in Lake Victoria. Long before we ran safaris, we were part of this community — which is why Roots & Gorillas isn't a stop bolted onto a wildlife itinerary. It's built around Ddagye Community Primary School, where 5% of every booking funds real classrooms, sanitation, and library supplies, managed directly by our family and reported on every year. You'll trek gorillas in Bwindi, then spend real days at the school and in the community that raised us, before closing out in Kampala. This is travel rooted in one family, one island, and one school — not a generic volunteer add-on.

Pick-up at Entebbe International Airport and a scenic road transfer toward Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, with stops along the way. Overnight at Ride 4 a Woman Guest House in Buhoma, an NGO-run guest house that employs 60+ local women and funds microloans, education, solar power and clean water for the community.
An early start for your guided trek through Bwindi Impenetrable Forest to track a habituated mountain gorilla family — one of the most extraordinary wildlife encounters on Earth. Gorilla permit ($800 per person) is included. In the afternoon, an optional visit with the Batwa community, Uganda's indigenous forest people. Second night at Ride 4 a Woman Guest House.
Travel day from Bwindi back toward Kampala, with a relaxed overnight stop to break up the journey before continuing on to the Ssese Islands.
Drive to the lake port and board the ferry (around 2.5 hours) across Lake Victoria to Kalangala on the Ssese Islands — our family's home community. Check in to Brovad Sands Lodge for the first of six nights, full board.
Your first structured half-day session at Ddagye Community Primary School: reading and storytelling with students, career guidance conversations, and time in the school library. Pre-arranged six weeks ahead with the school, run on their schedule, not ours.
A second school session focused on art and a community mural project, followed by canoeing on Lake Victoria in the afternoon.
A dignified, coordinated community market day with a fixed per-guest budget — no cash handouts. Guests booking Week 1 only depart this evening, taking the ferry back to Entebbe for their onward flight.
A conservation-focused school session: tree planting, composting demonstrations, and a talk on Lake Victoria's ecology for students.
A free day to enjoy the islands at your own pace — fishing, cycling, or time at the lodge's sauna. In the evening, a bonfire dinner where you'll receive your classroom contribution certificate showing the exact amount your trip funded, along with your Volunteer Certificate.
Ferry back to the mainland and a transfer into Kampala. Check in to your chosen Kampala accommodation tier for the final four nights.
A city day covering the Kasubi Tombs (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), the Uganda Museum, and a guided street food walk through the city.
A hands-on Ugandan cooking class, followed by an evening out exploring Kampala's nightlife, curated by the TRVE team.
A free day with an optional add-on trip to Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary on Lake Victoria. In the evening, a farewell dinner with the group.
Transfer to Entebbe International Airport for your departure flight.
Voluntourism has a real reputational risk when it's done badly — research from groups like the Better Care Network has documented how poorly-run programmes can harm the children they claim to help. Here's exactly how we avoid that.
School-based, not orphanage-based
We work with Ddagye Community Primary School, where children live with their families. We do not run or visit orphanage-style facilities.
Contribution built into the price
5% of your package price funds the classroom fund automatically. There's no separate donation ask, no pressure, no collection box.
Dignified, coordinated market day
Community market day runs on a fixed per-guest budget (roughly UGX 50,000–100,000), coordinated in advance. No cash is handed directly to anyone.
Photography requires consent, every time
Any photography involving children requires the school's consent, reconfirmed before every single visit — not a one-time blanket permission.
Proof, not promises
You receive a certificate showing the exact amount your trip contributed, plus biannual photo updates from the school. Group bookings get a formal written impact report.
Per person sharing, in USD. Final pricing depends on dates, accommodation tier and exact group size — these are indicative starting rates.

Impact-Conscious Travellers
Travellers who want their trip to mean something beyond the photos — they research where their money goes and want a community connection that's structured, not performative.
Diaspora Travellers
Ugandans and East Africans living abroad who want to combine a visit home with a gorilla trek and a structured way to give back to a community like the one they grew up in.
University Cohorts
Faculty-led groups looking for a genuine field school experience with academic framing — community engagement, conservation, and cultural immersion with a formal impact report.
Corporate CSR Groups
Companies running CSR or team-building trips that want a documented, reportable community contribution alongside a genuine wildlife and travel experience.
Add a few fun days before or after Roots & Gorillas.
Yes. Our community days are school-based, not orphanage-based, and run on the school's own schedule, not ours. The classroom contribution is built into the package price, not a separate donation ask. Market day is coordinated with a fixed per-guest budget and no cash handed directly to anyone. Any child photography requires the school's consent, reconfirmed before every single visit. You receive a certificate showing the exact amount contributed and biannual photo updates from the school.
Either works. Week 1 (7 days) covers Bwindi gorilla trekking and the Ssese Islands community days, and stands on its own as a complete trip. The full 14 days adds Week 2: deeper island immersion, conservation work, and a Kampala culture and food close-out. Many guests book Week 1 only; university cohorts often add Week 2 as a structured extension.
Yes. We work with university faculty coordinators on field-school style group bookings (8–10 pax rates apply) and with corporate teams on CSR trips. Group bookings receive a named plaque at the school and a formal written impact report, which most university and corporate partners need for their own reporting. Email reservations@theriftvalleyexplorer.com to start a group conversation.
5% of every Roots & Gorillas booking goes to the Ddagye Community Primary School classroom fund on the Ssese Islands, covering classroom construction, sanitation and library supplies. TRVE manages the fund directly and reports on it annually. You receive a printed certificate on Day 13 showing the exact amount your trip contributed, and we share photo updates from the school twice a year by email.
Roots & Gorillas works well as a field school opportunity, not a charity trip. We support faculty coordinators with group rates (8–10 pax pricing), a formal written impact report after the trip, and a named plaque at the school for group bookings.
