TANZANIA - BEYOND THE GREAT MIGRATION

Tanzania is one of the most enchanting and diverse nations in East Africa, a melting pot of local tribes, cultures, and ancient traditions, complemented by stunning vistas that fascinated all those who came to explore the magic of Africa: The Tarangire National Park with its elephant herds, unexplored rocky ridges, green valleys, and meandering river, the Olduvai Gorge revealing its treasure of prehistoric human life and Lake Manyara with flocks of pink flamingos skipping over the knee-deep surface of its serene waters.

With 17 national parks to explore, Tanzania never ceases to surprise the international traveler with opportunities to explore and natural wonders to enjoy, starting with the pristine white beaches of coastal Dar es Salaam to the snow-capped peak of Mt. Kilimanjaro, to the mist-covered caldera of the Ngorongoro Crater. And after that, the magical journey continues to the golden rolling savannahs of the Serengeti National Park, teeming with wildlife and home to ‘The Great Migration’, whose endless stream of animals crossing the Grumeti and Mara rivers is a wildlife phenomenon, unlike anything the discerning traveler can expect to experience on a journey into the heart of Africa.

Beyond the shorelines of Tanzania lies Zanzibar, a white sand island retreat considered part of modern-day Tanzania since 1964. The island is best known as the former residence and base of Dr. David Livingstone, the famous missionary and explorer. Equally distinguished explorers such as Richard and Isabel Burton, James Grant, and John Hanning Speke soon followed his lead to utilize his residence as the staging point for their own expeditions into the interior of Africa.

Just outside Zanzibar’s Stone Town stands Livingstone House, built in 1860. Livingstone himself was driven by just one singular objective: to help abolish the slave trade, which had been ravaging the continent for hundreds of years. Ironically, to survive and succeed, he frequently required the help of the slave traders and their well-organized caravans, who had ventured further into the Heart of Darkness than any Western explorers. On apparently more than one occasion, Livingstone was saved from starvation and outright destitution by none other than Tippu Tip, who, by all accounts we have, has been the most notorious slave trader of the 19th century in that region.

When his primary mission finally succeeded, with the slave trade in Zanzibar abolished in 1873, Livingstone had just been saved yet again, this time by American explorer Henry Morton Stanley, later called by his fellow travelers ‘The Smasher of Rocks’ for his almost superhuman capacity to keep going against all odds and where all others had failed; even resorting to dynamite to blast a road through the Congo. Livingstone himself did not live to see the construction of a massive cathedral over the former primary slave market of Zanzibar in 1877; he died in 1873 in a far-off region in modern-day Zambia.

For the enlightened traveler, this is the quintessential Africa, with its cultural contrasts, captivating landscapes, and fantastic wildlife wonders not found anywhere else. In Tanzania, the magic of Africa is alive in its natural marvels and spectacular vistas, an experience to cherish forever.
